Traditional Byzantine chainmaking meets substantial hammered silverwork in this one-of-a-kind sterling silver bracelet. Sections of hand-forged 18-gauge Byzantine chain are connected through heavy hammered paperclip links, creating a distinctive composition of dense woven silver and elongated, open forms.

Built entirely from solid sterling silver and finished with a hand-forged clasp, this bracelet combines substantial construction with the flexibility of an articulated chain.

Scale & Substance

Built for a wrist circumference of approximately 7–7.5 inches, this bracelet carries a substantial presence through its contrasting link structures.

The closely woven Byzantine sections create density and dimension, while the heavy paperclip links introduce length, open space, and visible hammer texture. Their alternating proportions give the bracelet a strong visual rhythm without sacrificing movement around the wrist.

Material & Chain Character

Solid sterling silver forms every component of this bracelet.

The 18-gauge Byzantine links create an intricate interwoven structure, contrasting with the broader, elongated shape of the heavy paperclip links. Hammer marks remain visible across the paperclip surfaces, emphasizing the direct tool work used to form them.

An oxidized finish brings depth to the Byzantine weave and definition to the hammered surfaces, highlighting the relationship between the two chain styles.

Studio Process

This bracelet is constructed link by link at the Sterling Roots studio using traditional hand-forging and chainmaking techniques.

The Byzantine sections are assembled from 18-gauge sterling silver links, then connected through individually forged, heavy-duty paperclip links. Each paperclip link is hammered to establish its surface texture and refined before incorporation into the chain.

A hand-forged sterling silver clasp completes the bracelet, maintaining the substantial construction and consistent bench work throughout the piece.

The finished silver is oxidized and polished to reveal the dimensional details of the chain.
