This one-of-a-kind sterling silver necklace is centered around a hand-forged raven captured in flight, suspended within a substantial handmade Byzantine chain. The composition balances sculptural imagery with architectural chain work, creating a piece that carries both visual movement and material presence. Forged and assembled entirely at the bench, the necklace reflects the disciplined metalwork and nature-inspired design language that define Sterling Roots' rarest studio creations. This singular work will not be recreated.
Architectural Form & Presence
At the center of the necklace, a hand-sawn and hand-forged raven extends its wings in mid-flight, creating a broad horizontal focal point that anchors the composition. The silhouette introduces movement and direction while maintaining a balanced presence across the neckline.
The raven is integrated directly into a handmade Byzantine chain, a structure known for its substantial visual rhythm and dimensional complexity. The chain creates a continuous flow of interconnected forms that support the centerpiece while carrying visual interest throughout the full length of the necklace.
At 19 inches, the necklace sits comfortably near the collarbone, allowing the raven and chain to remain fully visible as a unified composition. Adjustable links at the closure provide flexibility in positioning while preserving the integrity of the design.
Material Composition & Visual Impact
The necklace is forged entirely from sterling silver and finished with a bright, reflective surface that emphasizes the detail and dimensionality of the work.
The raven's wings create strong directional lines that contrast with the repeating geometry of the Byzantine chain. This interplay between organic form and structured linkage gives the necklace its distinctive visual authority.
The polished sterling silver finish allows light to move freely across both the sculptural centerpiece and the intricate chain, highlighting the depth and complexity of the forged surfaces without distracting from the overall composition.
Bench Practice & Studio Discipline
This necklace was developed through direct hand-forged bench work using traditional silversmithing tools in the Sterling Roots studio in the Adirondack Mountains.
The raven centerpiece was individually hand sawn and forged, requiring careful shaping to establish both the movement of flight and the structural integrity of the form. Each section of the Byzantine chain was assembled by hand, creating a continuous sequence of interlocking links that provide both strength and visual cohesion.
The clasp was also fabricated by hand and incorporates adjustable links, allowing the necklace to be worn at varying positions while maintaining the design's balanced proportions.
The finished piece reflects disciplined studio practice: precise sawing, controlled forging, complex chain construction, and deliberate assembly executed through traditional silversmithing techniques.
